Self-Confidence Formula

FIRST: I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose in life; therefore, I demand of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now promise to render such action.

SECOND: I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality; therefore, I will concentrate my thoughts for thirty minutes daily, upon the task of thinking of the person I intent to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture.

THIRD: I know through the principle of autosuggestion, any desire that I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object back of it; therefore, I will devote ten minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of self-confidence.

FOURTH: I have clearly written down a description of my definite chief aim in life, and I will never stop trying, until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.

FIFTH: I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure, unless built upon truth and justice; therefore, I will engage in no transaction which does not benefit all whom it affects. I will succeed by attracting to myself the forces I wish to use, and the cooperation of other people. I will induce others to serve me, because of my willingness to serve others. I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness, and cynicism, by developing love for all humanity, because I know that a negative attitude toward others can never bring me success. I will cause others to believe in me, because I will believe in them, and in myself. I will sign my name to this formula, commit it to memory, and repeat it aloud once a day with full faith that it will gradually influence my thoughts and actions so that I will become a self-reliant, and successful person.

I have a shoebox full of old photographs in my closet, photographs of my parents in their youth and of their parents in the early part of the century. I know who they are, as my mother had me write all of the names on the back of the photos when she passed them to me. My favorite photograph is a picture of my grandmother and her sister standing in front of the family fishing boat. I imagine that my grandmother could tell me a wonderful story about that photograph, about her relationship with her sister and about life growing up in a fishing village… but unfortunately, I won’t hear that story. My grandmother passed away when I was 13. Most of her stories were never written down……. And now that so much time has passed, who really remembers them? If I don’t know them, how will my children?
Our family stories are so precious to us, yet we do almost nothing to preserve them. We pass down those old photographs, but do we really know the stories behind them? Now that we have digital cameras, we take hundreds of photos, only to keep them in the digital graveyard we call a hard drive.
At one time, family stories would be passed down while sitting at the dinner table or while doing the dishes. Families took the time to really talk to each other…… they took the time to reminisce. Now we find ourselves working overtime, playing taxi, and generally rushing through the day.
It isn’t until something tragic happens that we stop and really think about those we love. .. and we never stop to think that other people feel the same way about us… Think about it… do you realize that how much love you feel for your parents is the same way your children feel about you? That is powerful. THAT is what life is about. It isn’t about red sweater you are buying your dad for Christmas. It is not about the new Ipod your teenager wants….. it is about connecting with your family and loved ones. You do that through story…….
By sharing stories, you strengthen your family roots, you givse a sence of belonging. You share the love that you feel towards each other, you remember…..
Although, it would be wonderful to have a life story of your parents and other family members……. Those are not the only stories that need to be preserved….. Your life story, your love story, the birth of a child, the winning homerun your child hit, your first car, your first kiss……. They are all so very important.
This is why I do what I do. I am a Heritage Maker. I help strengthen families. I help people preserve their past to remember in the future. I have seen first hand how stories bring families together.

• The power of story is a gift. When an elderly woman writes her story and 23 copies are purchased by her family……………….

• Can you just imagine the love she feels?

• When an expectant mom writes a story to her yet to be born daughter………………..

• Can you even imagine how that daughter will feel when she reads it??

How about the child who sees themselves in a book and now remembers the stories of baking cookies?
While I was working with a client on his life story, he called his son. He did not have a strong relationship with his son, and hadn’t for the past 30 years. He asked his son about some pictures that he had come across…….. soon they were reminiscing. This client even spoke with his daughter in law for an hour on the phone.. Someone whom he had only brief conversations with… This started two months before Christmas last year. Three days after Christmas, his son suffered a major heart attack. My client received a phone call that day. He is convinced that if it wasn’t for that book he may have never received a call.
Even Oprah believes that every story deserves a book of its own. She should know. She has her own Heritage Makers Storybook. My twins started school a couple weeks ago. As a proud Mama, I of course took my camera along to take photos. One of my girls was so embarrassed she took to covering her face. You would think that she would be used to being blinded by flash going off. :D

Anyway....

I was talking to my Aunt just a few days ago and she was complaining that I didn't send her printed pictures anymore. I have to admit that I don't. I take tons of pictures, create books, and make beautiful canvases with all of my photos, but I just don't print pictures anymore.

My poor Aunt doesn't even turn on a computer. She doesn't have a cell phone. She doesn't even have a digital camera (the poor thing :D) and she is only 54. All she cares about is putting a new photo on her fridge.

After I hung up the phone I got right onto my HM site and created a card for her.

I made this one as a 7x5 invitation style card. Now, my girls have a place of honor on her fridge.

I have always had a problem finding the perfect card to send. It didn't matter weather it was a Christmas card, a Graduation card, or even something to say that I was thinking about someone.

I would spend an hour going through each and every card on the rack getting more frustrated by the minute. I may be super picky, or just maybe, no one can say what I want to say but me.

Ever since Heritage Makers came up with Direct Ship, I no longer have this problem. It has made my life so much easier!

When my Dad was retiring from his job of 34 years, I was able to tell him how proud of him I was...... In my words, with the types of photos that I wanted to include.

Take a few minutes and think. Who needs to hear from me? Who haven't I taken the time to reach out to lately? Who do I miss hearing from?

Sure, texting and emailing are super easy.... but do they make the impact that you are looking for? Do they make the recipient stop for a minute and reflect on you, your relationship, and the mutual love and respect that you share?

How can you go about fixing this? I know driving over to Walmart or Hallmark takes time. You need to fight traffic, spend an hour looking for the right card, and have the priviledge of paying $7 to use someone else's words.

Why take photos?

I'm willing to bet your grandchildren will be upset with you. Here's why. Imagine, 50 years from now, as your grandchildren or great grandchildren are going through the boxes in the attic. They are enthralled with the treasures and keepsakes they find and how they tie into the story of your life.

Amongst all the old items, they find a number of round silver objects. Some have writing on them, some are blank, but they resemble some kind of a small platter about 4″ across, with a hole in the middle.

Puzzled, they take them to their parents. "What are these, Mom?" they ask. "Oh, I think those are all of grandma's photographs. Yep, here's one labeled `My Wedding'. Here's some more labeled `Family Photos,' and some more labeled `Vacations'."

"How do we look at them?" they ask.

"Well, I'm not sure we can. First of all, no one has the device that reads these anymore. Besides that, I doubt after all these years that they're any good anymore. Being stored in the attic, the heat and cold probably ruined them."

The kids are very disappointed. Nowhere amongst all the treasures are any actual prints. All that history is lost. Their connection with the past and all the wonderful stories that might have gone along with all those photographs are gone as well.

Along with all the wonders of our digital age come some significant problems that most people have never thought of.

Did you know that over 90% of all images taken on today's digital cameras are NEVER PRINTED? I'm guilty of that myself. I have gigabytes of personal photographs that have never been seen other than on a computer screen.

In the old days, film went to the lab and everything that was printable was printed. Even if it was a bad photograph, it still was a hard copy, a part of your family history and it had permanence. Even if they never went in an album, they at least went into a box, to be discovered as treasures years later.

The same problem exists in professional portrait studios today. Many people are simply asking for the images on CD. "I'll print them later" or "I'll design my own wedding album" are common phrases. Usually this is done with the thought that they'll save some money by doing it themselves.

But you know what? Most never make it into any kind of an album. Life gets busy and 20 years later they'll be looking for some way to read those disks.

I bring this up only to point out the importance of what we, as a professional studio do. Our job is not just to create the images, to create wonderful story telling photographs about the people in front of our camera; it's to create a final product, whether it be a professionally retouched and printed single image, a family heirloom wall portrait, or an incredible storybook album using a collection of the images that were created.

It doesn't matter whether it's a wedding, a newborn baby, a senior or a family. Having the final product created for you is important. To do less is to leave the job half done and to short change the customer.
So, if you're asked for a disk with all the images "so I can print them later", that's fine, just make sure your customers understand that if not printed, the conversation their grandchildren will want to have about their family history may never be able to happen.

MAKE AND TAKE!!
Do you need a fun CRAFT idea... here are some simple, fun and AFFORDABLE ideas!!!

SPECIAL MEMORIES BOX: This is a great way to keep all your favorite cards, notes, letters, etc. all in one place. (see photo below in previous post) This is made using 2 12x12 pages and a 7in craft box ($2 at wal mart).

FAMILY CLOCK: Super easy and a great addition to your home. This is made using 1 8x8 page and a 9 inch clock ($4 at walmart) (see photo above).

BLOCKS: Create your blocks to say whatever you want... does your reunion have a theme? If so make a block per family or per kid with the theme or family moto. 1 12x12 page will make 5 blocks, then cut a 2x4 into 7 in blocks. (see photo below in previous post)

TILES: Create a tile with an ancestors picture or grandma and grandpa with one of their favorite sayings. 1 12x12 page can make 4 tiles, then get 4 6x6 tiles at Home Depot (or any home improvement store).

My mother just sent me this link. Please take a look at it. Second picture down, there she is running the table to send cards to our troops.

Here is what she said " 281 cards were signed and will be mailed out tomorrow with the 78 packages to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We're still packing boxes, I think that it will be close to 100 by Friday. We're sending packages and hand knit afghans to an orphanage and hospital in Afghanistan, too."

I am so incredibly proud of her and all that she does to help not only my hometown, but our military.

My Mother works behind the scenes by choice and does not look for recognition at all. I want to give it to her now.... she is amazing.

What are your traditions for birthdays, holidays, or other special days of the year? Traditions are important; they define our lives, our dreams, and the things that mean the most to us. Like the Butlers, you too have important family traditions to preserve.

Triangle Area Chili’s restaurants are teaming up with the Triangle chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America to raise funds to send care packages to deployed troops. On Thursday, September 3, 2009, all Triangle Chili’s locations, including Raleigh, Apex, Cary, Durham, Garner, Knightdale, Wake Forest and Rocky Mount, when patrons indicate they want to support Blue Star Mothers, will donate 10% of each check to Chapter 7 of Blue Star Mothers. Chili’s requests that patrons bring in the flyer announcing the event, which can be found on the Web site listed below. The event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and includes take-out orders.

Founded in 1942 and chartered by Congress in 1960, the Blue Star Mothers mission is to provide support for service personnel and their families in all branches, promotes patriotism, assists veterans organizations and be a support group for each other. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is nonpartisan and nonpolitical.

One of our biggest projects each year is our Christmas care package campaign. Last year, we sent out 207 boxes and this year, our goal is to send 300. With so many of our North Carolina National Guard deployed this year, the need is greater than ever. This will be our kickoff event for this year’s campaign.

Walking for Breast Cancer

I received this from my cousin, Kory........

This past winter, my girlfriend Meredith was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare form of breast cancer. Her treatment included a lumpectomy and six full weeks of radiation. As scary as it seemed, Mere was brave and determined to confront and overcome this affliction (even braver than me - and keep in mind, I'm a total stud). Today, I'm happy to say Mere is cancer-free and we're both much stronger as a result of her resolve.
As a show of solidarity and support, we'll be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on September 12 and 13. On the 12th, Meredith and I will walk 13 miles. On the 13th, we'll walk up to 26.2 miles more. It’s a kick-ass commitment, one that will require a gym rat like myself to spend even more time doing one-armed push ups while neighborhood children sit on my back. But it can be done!
The money we raise will be managed by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade to help provide access to care for those that need it, fund educational programs, and accelerate research into new treatments and potential cures. We’ll be just two of thousands of people (like Honorary Chairman Reese Witherspoon) that will walk a marathon and a half over a weekend, raising awareness of the cause and educating even more people.
Of course, I can’t do this without your help. I know these aren't easy economic times, but I also know my family and friends are always there when I need them. And I need you guys now. I'm shooting for $2500 in 30 days. But DON'T break your bank! Donating is anonymous and every single dollar helps :) Besides, raising money should be much easier than finding someone who will hand me a Guinness along the marathon route. But I'm working on that too...

	TIPS AND TRICKS Photo Uploader With the new Studio 3.0 came some great improvements. Now you can upload photos into your Studio while you are working on a project. No more shutting down the project, uploading the photos, and then going back to the project. To upload a photo, go to the "My Photos" tab and click on the folder you want to upload to. A new button will appear at the bottom of the screen that says "Upload Photos." When you click on this button a dialog box will appear for you to select the photos you want to upload. You can click one or multiple pictures. After you choose your photos, they will upload and appear at the end of the folder you selected. Image Enlarger You'll love the new image enlarger. In the tabs "My Photos," "Art Collection," and "My Projects" you can increase or decrease the image size. For example, if you are in "Art Collection" looking at collections as a whole, you can increase the size of the images and see more clearly what each collection includes. The image enlarger is a small tool located in the bottom of the left box of the open tab. It works the same as the project image enlarger at the top of the screen. Click the small image to the left, the large image to the right, or click and drag the arrow.

Kim created a game for elementary age kids with the playing cards. "Family Talk" uses all 52 cards, each with a different question on it. The questions are used as conversation starters for dinnertime with the children. Each night they pull one card from the deck and everyone at the table answers the question.

When you have a problem, who can you go to?
What is your best motivator?

"I participate in Agility Training and Trials with my golden retriever Marley. When we register and get called to the line it is always done in the dog's name. Hence, all of the participants tend to remember the dogs, not the humans.

"I have used the playing cards to create trading cards that have a photo of the dog participating in agility and any information about the dog such as birth date, owner's name, titles earned, recognitions, accomplishments, etc. Because playing cards come in packages of 52, a couple owners have ordered together; each takes a suit or two, making the product affordable to most participants.

#7 - BROCHURES

Kim created something a little different with the 3 Fold. She owns a specialty videography company and needs, not a lot of brochures, just about 100. The problem is that the brochures are always changing and she has to use different ones for different trade shows and other events.

So, she made brochures using the 3 Fold. The custom-made brochures work perfectly and are nice quality—better than printed tri-folds from her office printer or from an expensive printing company. The 3 Folds work great for Kim's business plan and she sees a lot of potential for company and personal use.

#8 - CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Last Christmas Lynn used the playing cards to make Christmas ornaments. She put a picture of her kids on one side and on the other she put warm wishes. When she received the printed cards, she hung a plastic snowflake on the bottom of each card. She added a hook at the top and hung the card ornaments on the tree. Her family and friends loved the idea and this year want to give Lynn a picture of themselves so she can make new ornaments to add to her tree.

#9 - LEARNING CARDS

Cathi is a home school mom who found a great use for the playing cards. She split the deck in half and used 26 cards for the printed alphabet and the other 26 for the cursive alphabet. The cards are great for practice and memory games.

#10 - FLIP BOOKS

Anna used a camera that takes rapid shots to take pictures of her kids. She used the pictures and the playing cards to make flipbooks. Her kids love it. She says, "It's like handheld movies of themselves."

She also came up with the idea for two other great ideas:

Use two 3 Folds to make a giant die
Make a message board by wrapping ribbon in a diamond pattern around one of the wrapped canvases; reinforce the back with a few layers of corkboard.

#11 - LEGACY BOOK

"A picture of my deceased parents hangs on the wall in my living room and my four year old and I talk about them often. Not a day goes by that he doesn't look at those pictures and mention a story I've told. With that in mind, I'm always looking for that perfect Christmas gift for my brother and sister. Their needs are met and it's not easy to find the gift they will truly enjoy.

"So, I put the two ideas together. A storybook of our parents' legacy begins with them as children, outlining some significant events in their life while growing up, while in the military, going to school, their wedding, their children, and their grandchildren. I asked each sibling to write favorite memories to include. The most fun was learning what character trait each of them believes they have from each parent. I thought this would be a perfect way not only to memorialize my parents' enriching life, but a way for us to keep their memory alive through stories with their grandchildren, some of whom never got to meet them. I plan to give a book to each family for Christmas."

#12 - FAMILY REUNION RECAP BOOK

"Last year at our Peterson family reunion we had everyone write [their] memories and how they are related [to the family] on sheets of colored paper. Then we scanned them. We also took many photos.

"I am compiling some old, rare photos of generations past and new photos from last year—as well as the papers that were written last year. I will leave some room [in the book] for more notes from this year. I will also be putting in the back a list of all known contact info and leave room for any additional info."

TIPS AND TRICKS

Finding your story:
Starting your story is not always easy. And sometimes realizing your story can be even harder. First remember that everyone has a story. Your story can be about a vacation to Europe, camping in the mountains, your high school friends and activities, when you met your husband, when you found out you were pregnant, and on and on. Really, the stories are endless.

Sit down and write:
To get ideas flowing for your next story, just sit down and write. Those five minute exercises you used to do in grade school help a lot. Either at your computer or in a comfortable chair with a notepad and pen, write without lifting the pen for five minutes. You will be surprised by what comes to your mind. Then just take the ideas you get from your five minute exercise and begin expanding on your stories.

Look at pictures:
Another great way to find your stories is to go through your photos. As you look at pictures of you learning to ride a bike or playing kick ball with your friends, you will remember all sorts of moments that would be great in a story.

Remember and write it down:
The best way to start a story is to just remember and we are remembering all the time. The key is to have those memories with us when we're ready to write the story. So, when you're cooking dinner and suddenly remember how your mom used to dance around the kitchen while making family meals, jot the memory down on a notepad. When you’re tucking your child in at night and remember the stories your dad used to tell you, before you slip off to sleep, write it down.

LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE

Heritage Makers helped me out of a terrible rut.

I had gone through a life changing experience. I was a scrapbooker at the time. I knew that when this chapter in my life was over, I needed to scrap the story. It was an unbelievably important story, and I needed to capture it.

During this episode in my life, I purchased the finest album, page protectors, pens, pages, you name it. I had it all ready to go. But this experience was changing me in ways I could never have imagined. I began to hate pictures. I couldn't stand the thought of taking a picture, being in a picture, or looking at pictures. The emotional trauma of this experience led me to give up on the past, disregard the present, and fear the future.

Once I had come through that experience, I thought things would change. I would often pull out that special album, knowing I wanted to scrap the story of what had occurred over the last six months of my life. But I just couldn't do it. I continued staring at the empty album on my shelf.

Two years later, I met a Heritage Makers Consultant at a stamping event. She told me about the Heritage Makers site and I checked it out as soon as I got home. I booked a workshop in my home and got right to work on my first storybook.

In three weeks I published this very special story of my life, and I didn't even have to pay for it as I earned the credits by hosting a workshop. About a week and a half later, when the storybook showed up at my home, my life changed once more.

I had no idea what publishing that book would really mean to me. First, I have to say that when I first held that book in my hands, I knew why I could never start scrapping the story. It was such an important story of my life. And I knew I could never scrap it to look as good as it deserved to look. I could never do the story justice. When I saw my story—captured in this beautiful, classy, elegant storybook—I wept. This is where my story needs to live. This Heritage Makers storybook does justice to my story.

As I read every page and shared the book with those I love, I realized how healing the process had been. For two years I defined my life by this experience. It literally was all I was. And now that it had been preserved, I finally felt free to move on. I finally began to heal.

I share Heritage Makers with others because I know that the end product means more than just a storybook in your hands. It means honoring the stories of your life, and ultimately, it means honoring yourself. I’m honored to share the gift of Heritage Makers! And thank you, for pouring your hearts into this process. You are helping countless others celebrate, commemorate, and heal. Keep up the good work!

HERITAGE BOOK

Back in November I decided I wanted to make a Steeves Legacy book through Heritage Makers. The book would preserve family photos and give my children a better idea of the family I grew up in.

I determined to do this project when I looked at my grandparents one day and realized just how much they had aged in recent years.

My great grandmother was a very special lady—as was her husband, my great grandfather who died before I was born. Everyone who met her instantly fell in love with her. My best friend in elementary school once told me that her older sister had actually been named after my great grandmother because my great grandmother had done something special for her parents. But, although my great grandmother had touched so many lives and had a heart of pure gold, I had only known her as the old lady in the hospital that mom made me go visit. So when I see how much my grandparents have aged, it scares me to think that my children might only know them as 'old people.' Or perhaps my children will not know them at all.

The project was to be simple. I would go to grandma and grandpa's house one day and gather their photos so I could scan them. I would have grandma and grandpa tell me stories behind some of my favorite photos and I would write them down. Then I would put everything together in a book to preserve their photos. The book ended up taking months. I think I ended up publishing the first copy of it in February after starting it in November.

My grandparents had trouble remembering a lot of the stories behind some of their older photos, so I had to go to my uncles for additional information. Of course, the first person I turned to was my Uncle Darrell, or Uncle Bug as most of the cousins call him. I don't want to say he was my favorite uncle as all my uncles are special to me. But when I was growing up I spent a lot of time at his place and he had become a father figure to me, which was special because I lacked one at home.

I invited Uncle Darrell and his wife, Aunty Sue, to come over for supper so that afterward they could look through the photos and tell me a bit more about them. I didn't realize at the time that this was going to be the last evening I would spend with my Uncle.

One Saturday morning near the beginning of December, my uncle died quite suddenly of a seizure. He'd never had a seizure before. It was quite shocking to the entire family. He was having problems with his heart. But no one ever expected he'd be leaving us so soon.

When I set out to make this book, I worried that I would lose my grandparents soon. I never once thought that I was at risk of losing my Uncle Darrell. And I never thought when I started the project that the first page would be "In Memory of Uncle Darrell."

I wish that I had talked with my Uncle more while he was still here. I wish that I had taken advantage of his amazing wisdom more while I still had him at my disposal. I wish that I had visited him more. I really miss his crazy sense of humor and his excellent advice.

We printed ten copies of my Steeves Legacy book when it was completed and now almost all the families in my extended Steeves family own a copy. It is so special for me to go through the book and remember listening to and watching my Uncle Darrell as he relayed stories and reacted to photos from his childhood.

The book is mostly just photographs, but there are a few stories that give insight into the lives of the people. It is really hard but great to read through my Steeves Legacy book and know exactly which parts of it were told by my uncle. I wish so much that there were more of his stories in a book like Steeves Legacy. That wish is pushing me to create a book after each of my uncles and aunts and one after my grandparents. I hope you'll consider doing the same for the people in your life. The time you spend with them will be so great, and the resulting book will be cherished by you and yours for years and years and years.

It Sucks

"IT SUCKS"

I've had the pleasure to speak with so many wonderful women and men in the time I've been a consultant, but this most recent story makes me laugh the most!

I've been working with a client/friend on her storybook that documents her family trip to Hawaii. Martha is a converted paper scrapbooker and was a little reluctant to give it up, but quickly found joys in digital scrapbooking and the ability to print three copies of the book—one for herself and one for each son.

She placed her order just over a week ago and received it last week. She gave it to each of her sons and they both stood at the kitchen counter and read their books cover to cover. One boy-the oldest-simply picked up his book and went upstairs to read it again. He's been showing everyone since he received it!

The youngest son said nothing, and while Martha was driving him to hockey practice she asked him how he liked his storybook.

He looked at her with a straight face and said, "It sucks!"

Martha replied, "Oh really? Why does it suck?"

Her son said, "It sucks," with a huge smile on his face, "because now every time we go on vacation, you have to make me another storybook! And please start with our trip to Quebec!"

I can picture the devilish grin on her son's face as he said this. It made me feel so good that he loves his book enough to want to keep receiving more and more of them. That makes me love my job as a Personal Publishing Consultant even more!

THE STORIES WE SHARE

Stories are a major part of our lives. We live stories, we see stories, we hear stories, and we tell stories. Stories are a part of conversation. They help us tell others who we are. They help us define and understand our world. They help us relate and sympathize with others. They give us new perceptions and knowledge. They give us confidence and humility.

We don't always realize the impact our stories have on ourselves or others. Relating our stories can have healing effects on us emotionally and psychologically. Putting our experiences in words helps us gain perspective on issues and circumstances. Writing helps us better understand our personal world. And when we share those stories with others, they may seem almost trivial and insignificant, but to the listener, the story is something to take from. It helps them gain new insights and speaks to their hearts.

Stories are a part of who we are. They are the gateway we use to connect with others. They don't only mean so much to us, the tellers, but they mean so much to the listeners. And with every story, a new story begins... The story behind the story.
